The Leicester Guildhall Ghost: Explained

This research article has been Created to try to help explain something which has been a topic of heated debate ever since it was first shown in late 2006. The video which is show below appeared in local newspapers with sensational claims that it was the best evidence ever for paranormal activity, so when this was shown on our forum I checked it out immediately.

Thankfully many people are now aware of the true cause of this phenomena but others still make ridiculous suggestions as to what this is so below is what I believe to be the answer, based on the original explanation posted to the video's creators in 2006.

I believe that this is no more then a simple light reflection trick, by looking at the timer at the top of the screen you can clearly see that the video has been speeded up. As the sun does not rise in the same position in the sky every day this reflection might only happen once or twice a year leading the people who recorded it to come to the conclusion that something unusual was going on.

The reflective object is on the other side of the beam separating the windows on the right. This is my explanation with lines to roughly indicate the direction of the sun's rays.

  Screenshot 1:

This screenshot was taken near the beginning of the footage, Using my directional lines you can see how the sun light could be reflecting from something behind the window separator.

  Screenshot 2:

This time about half way into the footage, the sun is now higher in the sky, allowing a greater exposure of light hence the seemingly brilliant image.

  Screenshot 3:

I took this one near the end of the footage. In this motionless format it is clear that this is only a simple reflection playing tricks on our eyes. You can actually see the white square shapes (fire extinguisher?) on the wall now reflecting the light as it stretches across the floor and partially up the wall.

If you scroll down through the 3 images you can see how the sun's angle rises, and the anomaly travels across with it, closing the angle as it should.

  Screenshot 4:

If your still not convinced then look at this, taken right at the end of the footage. Whatever is causing this reflection can be seen glowing as the sun light hits it. The brighter the anomaly the brighter the area marked with the circle is.

Since writing this original report I visited the Guildhall with another team member to see if we could confirm that this theory is possible, here is what we found.

This is the same room that the light anomaly was captured in but from a slightly different angle. There is clearly allot of windows, reflective surfaces and the fire extinguishers which were illuminated by the light. But after visiting the location and looking at places at the building tops which could create the effect of a ghost I do not believe that it is a reflection but instead is the direct angle of the sun light shaped by featured outside of the building. The bright light on the floor is just caused by the light from the other windows.
Also to confirm that this was caused by a sunrise we took a compass with us on our visit and placed it on the window ledge. The red side of the needle is pointing north, the black is pointing south and as expected this confirm that the window is infact facing east, the direction the sun rises from.
